What is the marchamo?
It's the annual road tax every vehicle must pay to drive in Costa Rica. It includes the vehicle property tax, the mandatory auto insurance (SOA) and other legal charges; unpaid traffic fines are added to the bill. The INS (the national insurance institute) collects it from November to December 31, and from January 1 interest and surcharges apply.
What's new for the 2027 marchamo
- The receipt is no longer paper: the INS sends it in digital form.
- SOA insurance rates go up by an average of 4.03%.
Before you pay
- Look up the amount with your plate number on the INS website.
- Check for unpaid fines: they're charged together with the marchamo.
- Don't wait for the last week of December: payment points and websites get overloaded.
- To drive, you also need an up-to-date vehicle inspection (RTV).
