Marchamo 2027: where and how to pay it
Payment dates for the 2027 marchamo, where to pay (INS website, app, online banking and in person), the new digital receipt and mistakes to avoid.

Payment of the 2027 marchamo opens on Monday, November 2, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. and is due December 31. From January 1, 2027, interest and surcharges are added. This year the receipt also changes: it's no longer paper but digital. Here's where to pay it and what you get.
Before paying: look up the amount
With your license plate number, look up the exact amount on the official INS website. Our Look up your marchamo page has the direct link, along with the countdown to the deadline. If you want to understand what the bill is made of, read how the marchamo is calculated.
Where can I pay the marchamo?
- On the INS website, by card.
- In the INS Móvil app.
- In your bank's online banking: for example Banco Nacional, Banco de Costa Rica, Banco Popular, BAC and Promerica. Look for "Servicios INS" or "Marchamo" in the payments section.
- In person: at public and private banks, credit unions, mutuals and other authorized payment points, or at INS offices.
What do I get when I pay? The digital marchamo
Starting with the 2027 marchamo, the road permit is a digital document sent to the email address you enter when paying. So check that your email is spelled correctly before confirming the payment. Vehicles with a windshield receive a digital sticker; motorcycles keep the traditional marchamo.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving it for the last week. In the last days of December websites and payment points get overloaded.
- Forgetting fines. Unpaid traffic fines are charged together with the marchamo and raise the amount.
- Paying on unofficial sites. Be wary of websites or WhatsApp numbers that offer to "process" or look up the marchamo for money. The official lookup is free.
- Not checking the vehicle inspection. To drive, you also need an up-to-date vehicle inspection (RTV).
- Not checking the total. The INS adds an optional ₡11,900 insurance by default; see how to remove it.
