How to claim a lottery prize in Costa Rica
Deadline to cash a JPS prize, where to claim it depending on the amount, what documents you need and what to do if you bought your ticket online.

If your number came up in the Lotería Nacional, Chances, Lotto, Nuevos Tiempos or 3 Monazos, there's a deadline and a few steps to collect. Here's where to cash your prize, what you need and what happens if you bought online.
First: confirm the official result
The official winning numbers are the ones published by the Junta de Protección Social (JPS), Costa Rica's lottery board. On our lottery results page you'll find the direct link to the official results of each draw and the latest news about the draws. Compare the number, series and draw date on your ticket.
How long do I have to collect?
The deadline is 60 calendar days, counted from the business day after the draw. If you don't cash the prize in that time, you lose it: the money goes to the JPS. Don't put it off.
Where do I cash the prize?
- Small prizes: with authorized lottery sellers or at JPS service centers.
- Larger prizes: at the JPS head office in San José or at authorized bank branches, depending on the amount. Before you go, confirm with the JPS where your prize is paid.
What do I need?
- The original ticket in good condition: if it's torn, wet or altered, cashing it can get complicated.
- Your valid ID.
- For large prizes, the JPS may ask for additional information.
What if I bought the lottery online?
If you bought on the JPS online platform, the prize is paid by transfer to the bank account (IBAN) you registered. If you didn't register one, you can write to premiojpsenlinea@jps.go.cr or call 2522-2000.
Tips to protect your prize
- Keep your ticket somewhere safe from the moment you buy it, and take a photo of it.
- Don't hand a winning ticket to strangers who offer to "cash it quickly".
- If the prize is large, consider financial advice before deciding what to do with the money.
