Gas at ₡808: when the increase takes effect and how much more a full tank costs
ARESEP approved an increase of up to ₡89 per liter: the new prices for gasoline, diesel and gas, when they take effect and how much more it costs to fill the tank.
On October 29, 2026, the regulator ARESEP approved a fuel price increase of up to ₡89 per liter. With the adjustment, regular gasoline and diesel go to ₡808 per liter, and regular now costs more than super. Here's what changes and how much more a full tank will cost.

Prices are per liter at gas stations and the same everywhere in the country.
When does it take effect?
The new prices take effect the day after they're published in the official gazette, La Gaceta. Until then, the previous prices apply. Our gas prices today page reads RECOPE's price table every 15 minutes, so you'll see the change there as soon as it takes effect.
How much more does a full tank cost?
- Regular gasoline: a 40-liter tank goes from ₡28,760 to ₡32,320, ₡3,560 more.
- Super gasoline: 40 liters go from ₡30,560 to ₡32,240, ₡1,680 more.
- Diesel: 40 liters go from ₡31,400 to ₡32,320, ₡920 more.

Why is regular now more expensive than super?
Each fuel's price is calculated separately, from the actual cost of the shipments RECOPE bought. In this adjustment, the cost of regular gasoline rose more than that of super. For the full formula, read why gas prices change in Costa Rica.
How to adjust your budget
- If your car runs well on super, compare: while super is cheaper than regular, you lose nothing by using it. Check your vehicle's manual first.
- Check tire pressure and don't carry unnecessary weight.
- Combine errands into one trip and avoid rush hour; check the driving restriction.
- If you cook with gas, the 25-pound cylinder also goes up ₡549.
